Help move the plastic bottle mountain!

Did you know that in the UK we use a staggering 13 BILLION disposable plastic bottles a year – many of which are not recycled.

Having a re-usable bottle instead is an easy change to our everyday behaviour we can all make which will save money, reduce waste and help our planet.

Plastic from disposable bottles can remain in our environment for many years and cause an enormous amount of damage, often ending up in our oceans with a disastrous impact on marine life.

Waste and recycling experts estimate that of those 13 billion plastic bottles, only around half of them end up being recycled.

Promoting re-usable bottles is the aim of July’s Re-use campaign by the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) Waste Partnership and Renewi, the firm behind the award-winning waste treatment facility at Manvers.

Community Education Liaison Officer, Abi Cox, who is based at Manvers, said: “If only 10 per cent of us in the UK refilled just once a week, we could save around 340 million plastic bottles a year.

“This would make a huge difference to our planet, and it is much cheaper to fill up a re-usable bottle with tap water, which is perfectly good to drink.  Some bottles even keep your drinks cool all day – perfect for the warm weather.

“We know people in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham are really keen to do their bit to help the environment, and our monthly campaign is designed to help them achieve just that.”
