A new campaign to cut waste has been launched by the BDR Waste Partnership and Renewi.

A new campaign to cut waste has been launched by the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) Waste Partnership and Renewi, the firm behind the award-winning waste treatment facility at Manvers.

Each month the team will focus on a different theme with lots of ideas of ways you can re-use everyday items, starting in April with health and wellbeing.

Their message is that you don’t need expensive gym equipment to work out in the comfort of your own home.  Instead you can use household objects like tins and filled water bottles as small weights, and a beach towel as a yoga mat.  A chair can double up as a weight bench and heavy books as weights.

You can stay hydrated and healthy while exercising with a re-usable water bottle – saving you money and helping to save the planet at the same time.

Free workouts are available online, for example Joe Wicks the body coach app, and there are more ideas about exercising at home and using household items as gym equipment at 7 ways to workout at home for free

Community Education Liaison Officer, Abi Cox, who is based at Manvers, said evidence showed that exercise is good not only for physical health, but mental health as well.

“While gyms have been closed, it’s great that people have exercised at home more.  You don’t need expensive gym equipment to do it, with a bit of imagination, so many ordinary household objects can double up to do the job.

“Regular physical activity increases self-esteem and reduces stress and anxiety.  It has been shown to help prevent mental health problems and improve the quality of life of people experiencing them.”

Future Re-use Revolution targets include re-using in the garden, beauty products, clothing, re-usable swaps, buying second hand and getting young people on board.

Note to Editors: The waste treatment facility at Manvers processes around a quarter of a million tonnes of leftover waste a year from 340,000 homes across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, turning it into useful products rather than sending it to landfill.
