Which foods often end up in the bin at your house?

Take part in a short survey about your family's food waste and be in with a chance to win a prize.

Is it potatoes, is it bread, or maybe salad stuff?  Prizes are on offer for sharing your food waste habits in a short survey.

The survey is being carried out as a follow-up to the recent Love Food Hate Waste campaign, run locally by the BDR (Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham) Waste Partnership and Renewi, the firm behind the award-winning waste treatment facility at Manvers.

The results will help to determine the focus of future campaigns to help South Yorkshire residents cut down even more on food waste and save money.

Community Education Liaison Officer, Abi Reid, who is based at Manvers, said it was important to continue efforts to waste less food in order to help the environment by cutting global greenhouse gas emissions.

“It takes water, energy, fuel and packaging to produce the food we all love and buy.  Does it really belong in the bin?  We can all cut down on food waste if we buy only what we are likely to eat, make food last longer and make it go further,” she said.

“It’s estimated that one fifth of all the food we buy in the UK goes to waste, harming the environment and our wallets. Reducing food waste can save the average family up to £60 a month.

“There will always be a small amount of inevitable food waste, and this should be composted or wrapped carefully before being disposed of in household waste bins.”

More information about the survey can be found on the Waste Less South Yorkshire website (www.wasteless-sy.co.uk) or by visiting https://bit.ly/3jBD2zR.  There is a chance to win some food waste reduction gadgets when completing it. The closing date is the end of September.

Cutting down on food waste tips include:

  • Knowing your dates – the difference between ‘use by’ and ‘best before’
  • Savvy storage – how to store different foods to prolong their life
  • Perfect portions – how to avoid cooking too much
  • Loving your leftovers – getting creative and finding inspiration.
