Volunteer hours up for grabs for local community projects!

A group of school-age children wearing gardening gloves stand in a line on a grassy field, stretching their arms out during an outdoor activity. Two adults are demonstrating the activity.

Waste experts at the award-winning Biffa BDR Waste Partnership are offering an exciting opportunity to apply for volunteer hours to help good causes in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

The partnership is inviting local communities to apply for up to 30 hours of volunteering, delivered by the Community Education team. Biffa BDR aims to support groups and organisations working to make life better for communities around the waste treatment facility at Manvers.

The Biffa BDR facility deals with household waste from 345,000 homes in the area. The facility can handle up to 250,000 tonnes of waste a year with over 97% of the waste being processed instead of being sent to landfill.

Abi Reid, Community Education Liaison Officer at Manvers, said: “Volunteer hours are on offer to help people improve their communities, making them happier, healthier and better places to live both now and for the future.

“This year groups will be able to apply for up to a maximum of 30 hours of volunteer time from the Biffa BDR Partnership per project.”

Applications will be accepted from groups and organisations in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

The volunteer time is aimed at helping groups and organisations to improve community facilities and spaces in the area.

Some examples of how volunteer hours have been used in the past:

  • Painting walls and varnishing floors in community centres.
  • Painting fences and gates of community spaces.
  • Moving furniture between community buildings
  • Planting community gardens.
  • Administration for community group.
  • Supporting youth organisation education visits.
