Second-hand clothing competition entries
Thousands awarded to residents of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham in second-hand clothing competition!
The Biffa BDR Waste Partnership, serving 345,000 households across Barnsley, Doncaster, and Rotherham, recently ran a competition that saw residents being awarded for stylish second-hand outfits.
Many amazing entries were received, showing off some fabulous finds from local charity shops, Vinted and more. A standout picture showed off the entrants wedding dress, purchased from a second-hand bridal store in York.
This gorgeous dress and veil cost a total of only £530 – a bargain for a beautiful wedding look!
Some other stylish entries included wedding guest looks sourced from Vinted that would also be perfect for the races, as well as partywear created from upcycled second-hand garments.
One entrant who created an outfit for a cosy day in got creative with accessories, including a second-hand mug and book to complete the cosy vibes. The total cost of the outfit was only £1! This goes to show just how easy and cheap it can be to add second-hand clothing into your day-to-day life.
The fashion industry produces 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and Brits consume 62 million tonnes of textiles per year. By 2030, this is expected to reach 102 million tonnes. By using clothes for just an extra 9 months, you can reduce their footprint by 20-30%!
There are lots of ways to get more use out of your clothes, such as:
- Shopping second-hand to give used clothes a new life.
- Learning some sewing skills so you can mend holes and refresh old garments.
- Washing your clothes on a cooler setting to preserve the fabric for longer.
- Donating or selling clothes you don’t want anymore, rather than throwing them away!
Abi Reid, Community Education Liaison Officer at the Biffa BDR Waste Treatment Facility which diverts 97% of Barnsley, Doncaster, and Rotherham household waste from landfill said:
“This competition was a great opportunity for people from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham to show us some beautiful second-hand outfits proving that you truly can dress to impress without it costing the earth or breaking the bank.
The outfits really showed off people’s individuality and sense of style with lots of pieces coming from local charity shops and online marketplaces like Vinted.
The next time you have an event coming up why not give pre-loved a try – we’d love to see how you get on.”
