Off to university soon?

Exciting times, but don’t forget this is another opportunity to join the Re-use Revolution!

Setting up a new home away from home can be expensive, so here are some tips to help you save money and help the environment at the same time.

  • Ask friends and family if they have any spare crockery, cutlery or homeware.
  • If you know someone finishing University this year, ask them for stuff they no longer need.
  • Charity shops are also a great place to pick up some essentials.
  • Consider buying second-hand clothes for freshers, festivals, or just to refresh your wardrobe.
  • Don’t forget to take a re-usable coffee cup – perfect for an early morning lecture caffeine boost.
  • And a re-usable water bottle. Stay hydrated, save money, and help save the planet.
  • Re-usable bags are handy for the supermarket or carrying books to the library.
  • Put cardboard boxes from shopping online to good use. Box up your stuff in them to make your move easier; and when you’ve finished with them, don’t forget to put them in the recycling bin.
  • Text books can be expensive to buy new, so make the library your first port of call and check if your course provides digital copies of books and journals for free. They can also often be bought second-hand from previous students. Check out student forums, eBay, Facebook marketplace, and University social media groups to see what’s available.

The Re-use Revolution is a campaign being run by the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) Waste Partnership and Renewi, the firm behind the award-winning waste treatment facility at Manvers.

South Yorkshire residents are being asked to join in the Revolution to reduce waste, re-use wherever possible, and recycle in order to help the environment.

Community Education Liaison Officer Abi Reid, who is based at Manvers, said: “We wish everyone going to University this year all the very best in this new chapter in their lives. We’d also like to thank them in advance if they can play their part in helping the planet and make the move in an environmentally friendly way. “
